After arriving at MIA, I headed to the Turkish Airlines lounge to wait for Austin Xzandros to arrive. I paused to take a photo of some wall art when June Long saw me. We took a photo together
I settled into the Turkish Airlines lounge and enjoyed a couple drinks. After Austin landed, I joined him in selecting a rental car
We headed to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center, where we checked in
At the hotel lobby, we met Mars
Outside by the smokers station, I met Bobby Jean. I bummed a smoke off of him. I also met Lauren Phillips
Austin and I headed off to grab a bite to eat, finishing our meal at 1:10PM
We hit the exhibit floor, where we got set up at the CB booth. I met Poolboy Dex and Aki Kim. I reconnected with Sam Teck, and met Eleonoree. I met Alex Mann and bestcockhere. I met Shawn and Samantha Hayes
BattersUpRoyals stopped by the booth
I visited the Legal Fans booth, and met Noah
I met Stripes, whom Austin had met at the CB community dinner at EXXXOTICA Washington DC 2023
After the exhibit floor closed, we hung out at the hotel pool. I met Jess Dutton and Rach
I rode with Austin to the afterparty at MODE, where I had fun. It was too much for some, but with my earplugs, I happily availed myself of the open bar and bumping bass
I joined letsgethazy, sexyscienceteacher, Lushiana and went to Miami Velvet, but the high price of admission had us return to the hotel, where Lushiana decided to call it a night. The rest of us hopped the fence to the pool. I wore my new neon speedo
We got kicked out of the pool area, and went up to letsgethazy’s room. Samantha Hayes wanted pizza. We went to Rey’s Pizza, open 24/7. I ordered a Cubano that was nothing to write home about. Timestamp on receipt was 4:53:34AM, timestamp of the sandwich photo 4:55:35AM.
Sunday, June 30
I had a coffee and ate the hotel check-in cookie
I met glitterflick
I walked into the VIP lounge for my first time, where I met celluloid_alchemist
I met Sunny 420 Princess and Lady Laz. I met Victoria Peaks. I met Vampiress
I set up next to the Hayes
I looked over to see Samantha Hayes sucking on a lollipop held by Shawn Hayes
I recorded a sequence of Samantha Hayes with the lollipop, now held by me, while Shawn Hayes held her ponytail. One of the attendees walking by the booth (TS shirt) complimented us, sharing that he’d been shooting scenes for 35 years, but that what he witnessed was among the sexiest things he’d seen in a long time. I thanked him, and kept the camera rolling. I admit, it was very exciting for me, too 🤭
Attended the dinner at R House Wynwood. I sat next to Grey Desire on the bus ride to dinner
I sat next to Lushiana at dinner. Also at the table were Tiffani Love, Tyrell Jackson, Briina100, and Jai Swerve
I sat next to Lushiana on the ride back to the hotel
I was pretty lit from killing off the wounded soldiers at our table
Back at the hotel, I met Anthony, staff
Poolside, I met Giothegreatone
Wicca LaVey took my photos with Drizzy 12:34:19AM

Rolled a video at 8:50:56AM
I collaborated with Samantha Hayes. There’s a subpage deeper on my site with details on that scene. If you need help finding it, contact me
I rode the shuttle over to MIA: Dreads Way and Lyric Sky were also aboard. I invited them to join me at the Turkish Airlines lounge
I ran through the airport to return Austin’s cables, and wound up missing my originally-scheduled flights home
At the Turkish Airlines lounge, I took a shower
Dreads Way joined me at the Turkish Airlines lounge after Lyric Sky boarded her flight. We had a drink together, took a photo, and I dashed for my gate
I visited Miami from May 13 through May 16, where I attended my first in-person XBIZ and first XBIZ Miami, first in-person adult industry convention, and was thrown out of an event for the first (and hopefully last!) time in my life. It was an eye-opening experience. The lows were made up for by feelings of loving connection, and I’m grateful to have made industry friends.
Day One (Monday, May 13)
I landed at Miami International Airport (MIA) aboard AA2451, and hailed a Lyft after learning that none of the hotel shuttles offer service to South Beach. My driver, Edilberto, picked me up at 4:30PM, and dropped me off in front of the Crest Hotel at 4:52PM. He didn’t get out of the car to help me with my luggage when he picked me up, which I forgave on account of it being very busy at the rideshare passenger pickup area, but when he did it again at drop off, I was peeved. Still, I tipped the man, because I’m a G.
I checked in with the front desk, and rode the little elevator up to the third floor. After checking my room and dropping off my belongings, I walked over to the Sagamore Hotel.
I touched base with a woman at the entrance of the Sagamore holding a BLOSSM sign, got a time estimate for the next shuttle, and headed inside.
The lobby was packed with attendees waiting to clear registration. I decided to skip the crowd, and walked through the hotel and toward the pool area, where I found my way over to the Chaturbate cabana. I said hi to a man whose name I recognized from searching Bluesky for posts about XBIZ Miami prior to committing to attending (he will not be named, because his demeanor toward me remained icy throughout the event). It was pretty quiet outside, not to mention hot, so I headed back inside.
I joined Chloe Wildd, Jo Wildd, Lushiana, and Drizzy on the limousine shuttle bound for the BLOSSM House Party. I listened to Chloe and Jo conversing in French, and asked them where they were from to break the ice, learning about how they work together as the conversation progressed. A man on the shuttle (I want to say his name was Vlad – I later bummed a smoke from him early on Day Two) rolled some video of us.
When we arrived at the house, I spotted a drone overhead. Security had us each show our invitations, and we were welcomed with a glass of champagne and a swag bag to kick things off. It was nice enjoying the more intimate setting of a house party, complete with wait staff and hors d’oeuvres. I met a couple folks that worked for Blossm (Katie and Ryan), and a bunch of content creators (Brody Biggs, Laila Delight, SenpiePov and Syndica, Jake and Margot Diamond, Grey Desire, juicypomma, and patootiepeaches). I met heartmyarc, likemyashe, and nedfitness on the shuttle back to the Sagamore.
Back at the Sagamore, I bumped into a couple folks whose names I recognized from the XBIZ Telegram group: Uncle D Assman and Dugmor. They were joined by TheAntonioHard.
I waited in the Chaturbate line for registration. When I eventually reached the front of the line, the woman helping me couldn’t find me on XBIZ’s list of registered attendees. I thought this was strange because I’d engaged in some rapid-fire correspondence with XBIZ mid-week prior to the event, and had even written in before its start to confirm my registration:
[email protected] left me hanging after being initially communicative
The woman gave me a wristband so I could attend the evening’s White Party, and urged me to find her in the morning.
I walked from the Sagamore over to GALA Miami, meeting Holly along the way, and attended the White Party. The venue was packed, the music pumping. I pulled my earplugs (Amazon.com) from my bag and inserted them, made a lap, and went back outside for a breather before diving in again. I snaked my way around the venue and eventually settled at one of the two Chaturbate booths, where I drank some mixers and chilled, soaking in the atmosphere.
Chloe, Jo, and Lushiana eventually showed up. They invited me to dance with them. Jo and Chloe left at some time in the night, and the XBIZ sponsor booths were eventually taken over by other, civilian patrons (I learned this when I went to fill my cup from a booth, only for a man to pry away the bottle from my hand, and set it back upon the table). I tailed Lushiana out of the club, a story I’ll save for my premium OnlyFans.
I wandered the Sagamore grounds in the wee hours of the morning and bumped into Ricky Johnson of Ricky’s Room and his crew (Riley and Janae).
Day Two (Tuesday, May 14)
I grabbed a cup of coffee to go and walked over to the Sagamore to register. While in line, I met Heather Dominique. I found the woman who helped me the previous night, and she saw me through registration.
I’d arrived early enough to catch the tail end of ’80s-Themed Aerobics, but passed on joining after seeing a cameraman filming the participants. I walked out to the pool, and happily, saw a group of people doing yoga, led by Goddess Charlie Cake. I hadn’t realized there would be yoga instruction, but decided I’d run through my flow in the relative comfort of the Chaturbate cabana. It had been a while, and I knew it wouldn’t hurt.
I attended the Speed Networking event and met a bunch of folks (Joey of Joey’s POV, Peter with Frosting.ai, DrRideout, Emily Hopkins with Beyond Closed Doors, Al Cheech, Charlie Rae Hunter, Begi, Wendy Nelson, Kristy, Dan Cooper, Caitlyn Brooks, Slim Flexxxington, Abe, Tyler of gigsocial, Blaze Von Byrne, Anna Lynx, and Gleb Sanj of AS Talent Agency).
I popped over to the Creators / Models Lounge and met Daniel, Marketing Director with My.Club. I caught MelRose Michaels walking past, recognized her name, and made sure to say hi. Back in the lounge, I chatted with August Skye. I had a slice of pizza or two, and cooled off. I met Nicole Aniston and Joseph, and scheduled a reiki session with Nicole. I met Eric and Ky-Lee, and may even have snuck Diesel a pizza crust (with permission!).
Just past 2:00PM, I experienced my first ever reiki session under Nicole Anniston. She told me that she had done some work to unblock my throat chakra.
Thank you Nicole Aniston for providing me with my first ever reiki experience!
Back outside, I met Alex Anne, Account Manager with FansRevenue.
I wound up visiting the Hookup Hotshot cabana for a while, where I met Scott Tann, business manager. He pointed out some of the other folks behind Hookup Hotshot (Mike, the investor; Leon “ogfoto”; Nade Nasty) as well as visitors to their cabana (Jeff Dillon, Lola Aiko), and encouraged me to connect with them.
I linked up with Brody, and we walked over to I Love Liquor, where he picked up a six-pack of Coronas. We smoked a cigarette together before heading back into the Sagamore: he had a nearly-finished pack of Lucky Strikes on him, as well as a pack of Marlboros, and offered me a choice between the two. I went for the Luckys, holding onto the pack with one for the road. I offered the final Lucky Strike to Scott after linking up with him again.
Brody encouraged me to try out the 360 orbit video rigBrody Biggs and I took a photo together in front of the XBIZ sign
The XBIZ Miami Wet T-Shirt Contest kicked off behind schedule. I had my Fujifilm X100V with me, and wanted to shoot coverage as potential content for my channels, so moved to position myself to be able to capture the contestants and their performances. Prior to any filming, I’d been warned by a large, older security guard that a couple of the photographers in the thick of it were being paid by one of the models to provide coverage, and I’d dismissed him by telling him I’d talk to her and try and win friends. Not knowing which of the photographers had seniority, I did my part to stay behind anyone else who was already posted up.
It’s clear from the audio and video I recorded that I upset some folks there. In the earliest publication of this blog post, I only had my own footage to work with. Later, I was able to acquire some footage from another attendee capturing the moments leading up to Buster’s complaint, which I paired with audio recorded from my camera:
Beginning at 0:43, Buster complains, “Alright. You keep, like… I move up, you move back.”
He threatens, “Don’t make me tell the security…”
I thought Buster was tripping, and pointed out I was trying to work with the limited space I had, not to mention I was shooting from behind him. It hadn’t occurred to me that we were standing right by Theresa Nguyen Muñoz, XBIZ Event Coordinator. I respond, “You can talk to him all you want. Good luck.” While factually accurate, I recognize I escalated the confrontation, and my statement elicited a visible response from Theresa.
I stepped toward the security guard, that I might clearly explain my side in the event Buster decided he wanted to raise a complaint.
Buster complains, “He keeps getting in my face. Can he just stand behind me?”
I explain I’m just trying to get a good angle.
Theresa interrupts. Her first word directed toward me is, “Yo.”
I finish, “This guy’s tripping.”
Theresa continues, “You all up in my personal space, too.”
The security guy announces, “Alright, I’m gonna give you five more seconds.”
I tried my best to avoid bumping anyone while still keeping a clean frame. I recorded for another 2 minutes 35 seconds before the security guy says, “Yo, you gotta back up.”
Theresa Muñoz joins in, “Yo, my guy.”
I try explaining my camera strap touched her. The situation escalates, and the security guy says, “I’m gonna give you to the count of two. Two,” at which point he starts pushing me.
About a minute later, I finished repositioning to get a better shot, and to avoid being too close to the complainants. I was at this new position for about 18 minutes, and able to record another 16 minutes 55 seconds. For whatever reason, I didn’t capture the final moments leading up to my removal by security.
Fortunately, I was also able to get some footage capturing what happened after I stopped recording:
Starting at 0:19, I begin to leave the frame. At 0:59, I reenter from the right side of the frame, and yield to Theresa Nguyen Munoz. I return to where I had been filming, stepping behind Moe Helmy. At 1:14, Moe Helmy can be seen looking in my direction. He moves to the right side of the frame and, at 1:20, pauses by the security guy. At 1:31, the security guy begins moving in my direction, and by 1:33, his right hand is on my left shoulder.
I don’t think Moe’s pausing by the security guy, followed swiftly by the security guy’s laying hands on me, was coincidental. Moe had sufficient time to communicate that he wanted me gone. However, only Moe Helmy knows what Moe Helmy did in those crucial seconds.
If you or someone you know has better coverage of what happened, please do contact me, because I’d love to see and share it (I’m happy to provide attribution, or to leave your submission anonymous)!
The tall, younger man with the dark hair and tattoos jabbed a finger my way, locked eyes with me, and said something to the effect of, “You. Out. Now.”
I resisted his pushing me and tried to talk with him, but he wasn’t having it. I remember him lifting me at one point, and me using my legs to brace against something to prevent him from moving me. One of the Sagamore hotel bartenders I spoke with on Day Three remarked that it looked like I was doing parkour.
After he’d gotten me out the back gate, the security guy gave me a shove, and pushed me to the ground. My X100V was uncased, and I was holding it in my right hand. I instinctively moved to protect it, knowing a solid hit to its face might be the end, and landed funny, resulting in an injury that took a visit to an orthopedic surgery and ~9 months from which to recover.
My Fujifilm X100V was damaged
I was a bit stunned at first, and my first move was to attempt to gain reentry through the same gate. The security guard who’d just pushed me out looked at me, shook his head in disbelief, and shut the door on me again.
A Francophone black man wearing a rastacap accompanied by some young children happened to be walking by the back gate. He engaged me, and offered me the last of the blunt he was holding. Some other guy asked me about the event, and I told him he could, like, me, earn his way in.
As I walked around the property, the pain began to set in. Not only had I suffered the embarrassment and humiliation of being pushed out of the event by security in front of everyone, but now I had open wounds on my hand, forearm, and knee.
I racked my brain, trying to figure out who had loosed security upon me. Was it the other photographers?
I found myself suddenly looking at the entrance of the Ritz-Carlton. I’d seen it on the map, and decided I’d pay a visit. I took a seat at the end of the wrap-around bar, and the bartender got me a glass of water. I didn’t take a sip of it, and decided I’d go in search of a restroom. I bumped into the bartender while wandering the corridors, and she pointed me in the right direction.
I was approached by Ritz-Carlton security: the bartender must’ve been weirded out by a man walking in off the street, sitting at her bar without ordering anything. I asked the man for first aid, showing him my fresh wounds. He led me to a sitting area in the lobby, and instructed me to wait. I grew tired of waiting, and decided to clear out.
I walked back to the Sagamore. The big security man I’d spoken with earlier came out and spoke with me. He told me he couldn’t let me back in, yet. I told him there were other events taking place that night that I wanted to participate in. He told me to go back to my hotel and get showered, and that he’d communicate with the rest of his team, and they’d leave me alone.
By 7:52:36PM, I was showered and back inside the Sagamore. I know this because I inadvertently recorded a short video clip at that time: I was keeping my phone at the ready in the event I had another unpleasant interaction with security. Fortunately, none took place. I made a point of stopping at the front desk and requesting first aid and an incident report. The man there produced some alcohol wipes and bandages, but didn’t seem willing to help with the latter part of my request.
8:05:52PM The wound on my knee from being ejected out of the back gate and pushed off-balance
Looking at my watch, I realized I might catch the end of the AS Talent Agency Cocktail Hour. I entered the Water Lion Bar, and a woman seated at the bar beckoned for me to come over. She told me she was a writer, and she wanted to film a project. I got suckered into buying a drink, and showed the footage I rolled earlier.
I dipped from the Water Lion Bar, and hung around the Sagamore pool for the Neon Nightswim Pool Party.
I reached out to AS Talent Agency at 10:19PM requesting details on their Nyotaimori Sushi Party. They initially responded with the address, but withdrew my invitation at 10:30PM:
(It turned out I didn’t need to do all this, because the photo I’d taken of Gleb’s phone at 11:13:48AM actually contained the address, but given my invitation had been rescinded, it wouldn’t have been right for me to have shown up. AS Talent Agency did not respond to my request for further information on how they were informed of my “incidence.” I’m still salty I missed this party, because I love sushi and hookah, and I don’t use that word lightly.)
I caught up with Brody Biggs and some of his friends on the beach, but felt my energy flagging, and went back to my hotel room to crash.
Day Three (Wednesday, May 15)
I freshened up, grabbed a cup of coffee to go, and arrived at the Sagamore in time to catch the tail end of yoga, but couldn’t participate on account of my wounds.
I saw Syndica and SenpiePov at the Chaturbate cabana, and visited with them

I participated in the speed networking event, and met some new people (Sofia with IWantClips, Steve G with Hope, Laurel with Fancentro, Carla Volk with Amateur, Zach Levy with Composer, Katherine Studley of The Only Consultant, Mia Zavala, Britti Bratti, Tati of sex.com, Lydia of lyd.io, Avneet Walia with Peach Club, Michael Sperber, Shay with Traffic Haus, Ian Austin Humboldt, Bosslady, uirigame, PeachyCatSnack, Ronnie Costello with Spoiled Productions, Big Max, Manoeshka, Cody Webb) in addition to chatting with folks I’d met during the previous day’s session. I shared my security incident with one of the folks I’d met the previous day, and they suggested I speak with Theresa Munoz.
uirigame stuck around to chat afterwards. Meeting her turned my XBIZ Miami experience around.
uirigame took me over to the Fansly (fan signup / model signup) cabana, where I engaged with Kelvin Nguyen, Creator Acquisition Manager (Kelvin did not respond to my email asking if there were higher-ups at Fansly who had requested Theresa remove me from their cabana). Toward the end of my interaction with Kelvin, I asked if I might grab an energy drink. I’d just cracked into it when Theresa Nguyen Muñoz approached me, tapped me on the shoulder, and asked if we could talk privately. I was surprised she came and found me, and sensing this might be an important interaction, surreptitiously began recording at 12:36:18PM:
Sober, I can handle tense situations.
I moved through the convention differently for the rest of my time there: camera always at the ready, and never rolling solo.
I met Asa Akira at the Pornhub cabana. Meeting her was important to me: I’d made a note before heading to Miami that she’d be in attendance, and knew I had to defuse the situation with Theresa Munoz, if only to ensure I got my face time in with Asa. I handed uirigame my camera, and at that time, realized there were smudges on its optic.
It was an honor meeting Asa Akira! Credit: uirigame
I met Lana Del Lust.
We met Sona Bella, who rolled with us. I met Judith (Karups?). I bummed a Lucky Strike off of Lana Inked, who’d picked them up in Switzerland.
Back inside the Sagamore, I chatted with John S. Austin, Esq.
uirigame, Sona Bella, and I found a table indoors, right beside the Creators / Models Lounge, where we sat and cooled off. uirigame scored a slice of pepperoni pizza for me.
I met Dylan Rose, Athena “Bella,” Ryan Woods, Nick Zargarpour, Jasmine with Fleshlight, Taboo Toby and Claire Black, Wendy with Pineapple Support, and Lawton Ceeblue.
I met Alex Cucu, and subsequently spent some time looking out for his dog, Spot.
Alex Cucu and I took a photo together in front of the XBIZ sign
I went back to my hotel room and swapped my Fujifilm X100V for my Sony A7SIII, bringing it out for the first time since my arrival in Miami.
uirigame told me she had a friend who wanted to meet me. I walked over to where she was staying, Aqua Hotel, and it was there that I met Princess Sophia Quinn. I had seen her post on Reddit prior to the convention and sent her an email, but failed to respond, for which I apologized profusely upon meeting her.
uirigame hadn’t gone to the beach, yet, so together with Princess Sophia Quinn, off we went.
I headed to the Chaturbate dinner at Dolce Italian, but was turned away by the Chaturbate representative on account of the fact I didn’t have a Chaturbate wristband. Apparently they’d been handing them out at the cabana, and I’d managed to miss out. The host told me there were some folks in attendance who weren’t supposed to be there, and they had hit capacity. Shame.
I wandered back to the Sagamore, stomach empty, and met Tiger Lilly at the Chaturbate cabana. I’d seen her the previous day at the Hookup Hotshots cabana, but didn’t want to intrude at the time, so it was nice to make her acquaintance.
That night, I broke form. Maybe it was a result of my reiki session with Nicole, or maybe it was adrenaline from being manhandled the day before. I saw Daria with Bongacams in the pool, wearing just her shorts and a bra. She climbed out and rejoined the rest of the Bongacams folks, but I caught up to her, and called out her name.
“Daria?”
She turned and looked at me.
“I’m sure you get this all the time, but you’re beautiful.”
We walked and talked, and I learned she had done some international modeling, including a stint in Tokyo.
I doubled back to the pool area, and met Taylor Nicole. I reconnected with uirigame and Princess Sophia Quinn at the LoyalFans cabana, where I chatted with Dr. Tampa, whom I’d bummed a smoke off of the night before. Teeny Nene sat on the couch, but I wanted to bounce ideas on prevention of piracy with Dr. Tampa.
I rolled some footage of WeGotTheFeet collaborating with uirigame and BrattyTickles.
We walked the perimeter of the pool, and met James at the Chaturbate cabana before bouncing over to the Aqua Hotel.
At uirigame and Princess Sophia Quinn’s suite, I met Leairis and BodyByBlunts in proper.
uirigame, Princess Sophia Quinn, and I went to Moshi Moshi, where we had a bite to eat:
We went back to Aqua Hotel and uirigame caught some precious shuteye before catching a cab over to MIA.
Day Four (Thursday, May 16)
My flight out of Miami, AA2055, was delayed. I shared a Lyft with Princess Sophia Quinn to MIA, accompanied her through security, and took her to the South Terminal Turkish Airlines Lounge, where we grabbed a drink at the bar, and then led her on a mad dash through the terminal, dragging her wheeled carry-on behind me.
I had to clear security a second time to enter MIA’s North Terminal to wait for my flight. Once clear, I made a beeline for the Turkish Airlines Lounge. The man in front of me was denied entry on account of the fact the Priority Pass he showed the receptionist didn’t match his name as it appeared on his boarding pass. She offered that he could purchase a day pass. Upon hearing the price, he hesitated, and began to walk away.
I moved my luggage along and smiled at the receptionist, that smile that says, “Glad that’s over…” and presented my own Priority Pass and boarding pass for inspection. I mused aloud, “Maybe I can invite that guy in.”
A woman waiting in line behind me overheard me, and offered to call for him, if I’d like. I gave a nod and a shrug, and she got his attention. The man joined me at the receptionist’s desk, and we walked in.
The North Terminal Turkish Airlines Lounge was not nearly as well-appointed as the one I’d just been in, but it had enough to tide me over. I poured myself a drink from their self-service bar, and checked out the buffet.
I learned that my guest was flying to Doha, and from there to India. He revealed that he was from Delhi, and I uttered a, “namaste,” before dipping for the restroom. He needed to go, too, and I held the door of the single-occupancy room for him after finishing my business.
The Priority Pass app stated this lounge had shower facilities available, but I didn’t see any. I asked someone working there, and they directed me to speak with the receptionist. She told me to wait about ten minutes, during which time I grabbed a few nibbles, and refreshed my drink. I enjoyed the shower facility, and made sure to tell my Indian friend about it, too, before fixing myself one last beverage, chugging it, and running through the airport to my gate to catch my flight home.
Post
I’ve been covering events officially since 2008, when I began working for The Collegian, my alma mater’s newspaper, as a photographer. I’ve shot events next to ESPN crews, including an exhibition match between the OKC Thunder and the Houston Rockets. In my time at the University of Missouri, I developed an increased appreciation for the valuable work of journalists through my time spent engaging with students and faculty at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. I make a habit of engaging respectfully with media and security everywhere I go because I’m very much cut from the same cloth as them. You bet your ass I’m mad about what happened to me in Miami.
I was brought up in the Christian faith. In spite of the public humiliation and injury to my person and equipment that I suffered, I was prepared to turn the other cheek. After clearing the incident with security, I was prepared to forgive the overzealous man who’d tossed me out and pushed me to the ground. After talking with other attendees on Day Three of XBIZ Miami, I was prepared to talk to the XBIZ representatives to find answers. When Theresa spoke to me the way she did, the mood changed, and I felt what had happened to me was personal.
I shared this photo on XBIZ.net, in a thread where attendees shared their experience at XBIZ Miami 2024 (XBIZ.net):
My wounds on May 17, almost three days after I received them
Through my interactions with other content creators, I learned I wasn’t alone in feeling like I’d been mistreated at XBIZ Miami 2024. I heard firsthand about E11EVEN Miami’s mishandling of creators with disabilities during the XBIZ Creator Awards After-Party.
Separately, another creator told me that she was sexually assaulted in the pool at XBIZ Miami 2023. She went non-verbal and remained crying in the pool after the incident. Someone with XBIZ spoke to her friend, asking them to pass along the message that she was harshing the vibe. What sort of response is that?!
On June 2, I learned Theresa Nguyen Muñoz blocked me on Instagram, in spite of the fact I have made no attempt to contact her there.
On July 17 at 2:17AM, this blog post became the subject of a cancellation attempt made against me. This followed my submitting my registration for XBIZ Amsterdam on July 15, and spending some time on XBIZ.net on July 16, during which time I responded to a thread posted by Alec Helmy asking about favorite dog breeds (XBIZ.net). While I don’t have any conclusive evidence pointing to any role XBIZ may have played in the cancellation attempt, the timing is uncanny, to say the least. That XBIZ’s (a trademark owned by Webstar Marketing Group, Inc.) most public face is a media organization (read: they know the art of spin) and that their representatives appear to have overreacted and mishandled a content creator, resulting in injury to that creator’s person and property (read: they had something to lose by my successfully promoting this piece) mean they had both the capacity and the motivation to attempt to destroy my credibility.
XBIZ used the controversy as an opportunity to have an attorney send me a letter barring me from future XBIZ events.
On September 23, I visited with an orthopedic surgeon upon referral from my PCP. He suspected the continuing discomfort from my shoulder injury was subacromial bursitis, and administered a shot of Kenalog.
All of this has filled me with a righteous anger, and I’d happily call for the cancellation of XBIZ (#CancelXBIZ, anyone?). Perhaps you would, too.
I initially shared all the raw video I captured during the XBIZ Miami Wet T-Shirt Contest in this blog post, but pulled it, after it became a point of contention in the attempt to cancel me, and it was no longer necessary in light of the third-party footage I received (which does a much better job of depicting what happened to me)
uirigame bought me a three-day pass to attend Kimochiicon, which ran from May 17 – May 19. I hit up Kussah, and after some miscommunication, we wound up taking my BMW E85 Z4 on a bit of an impromptu roadtrip. Kimochiicon was my second in-person adult-only convention, and it was very different from XBIZ Miami in that it was open to everyone. Furthermore, I had @PaultheYorkie with me
Some traffic lights were still down as we made our way out of Houston on May 17, making the trip out of Houston more time-consuming than normal
Upon arrival at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Dallas Frisco Hotel & Convention Center, I bummed a smoke, and allowed Paul the opportunity to relieve himself
We headed inside the convention center, where we met growthstone and Opal. godswill helped direct us over to registration
We linked up with uirigame, who introduced me to Aqua and SpiderGeMo
Kussah and I found a room at the nearby Comfort Inn, and crashed

He’d offered to teach me to ride, and given the craziness of this past year, I’d been itching for a change in scenery. I booked two separate one-way flights, deciding I’d skip the budget carriers and being nickeled and dimed to lug along my gear, and ensuring I’d return home with a 14-day quarantine period ahead of the holidays.
Tuesday, October 27
My father dropped me off at IAH. With a bit of time to kill, I stopped by Landry’s for a couple drinks.
I was one of the last to board the aircraft, and was somewhat surprised to find it mostly full. I made my way down the aisle with Paul in tow, and found a man occupying my seat. I let him know I was ticketed for the aisle seat, and he rose to grant me passage. As I stood there, he quickly realized upon studying the seating map beside his head that the aisle seat was not, in fact, his. I assumed my seat, and settled in for the flight.
Earlier that day, I’d purchased a digital copy of Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds (Amazon.com). During the flight, I read it on the Kindle app, and experimented with highlighting and note-taking. At times, I felt quite moved by the text, and lifted my eyes up from my phone’s screen.
Throughout the flight, I noticed issues with mask compliance. I overheard a flight attendant reminding a passenger just a couple rows ahead they’d agreed twice before boarding to keep their mask on, observed the passenger in the far window seat furtively slipping down his gaiter, and the man seated immediately to my left keeping his down even after his significant other verbally exclaimed, “Oh, masks,” after they’d finished consuming what they’d received during the beverage service. Meanwhile, I hadn’t even touched my coffee, as I waited patiently for my neighbors to take a hint.
When I rose to dispose my spent coffee cup, I asked the flight attendants whether they’d been catching flak with customers often, and the one said yes, “It’s not fair.”
At one point I became so irritated by the passenger in the far window seat that I pelted him with a packet of sweetener. He remained oblivious for some time, until our eyes met, and I think he finally got it.
We touched down at LAS, and as we taxied toward our gate, I phoned Mike. Upon clearing the jetway, I was fairly impressed by the sheer size of the terminal, made all the more impressive by the dearth of people there. I took the opportunity to capture some photos of Paul by the slot machines.
Mike picked me up at the airport in the Lexus – he’d been delayed slightly because some bigwig had blocked off all traffic to the terminal.
Paul predictably latched onto Peach upon meeting her. We took the dogs out for a walk around the neighborhood, and Paul followed her the entire way.
We went to Roberto’s Taco Shop for dinner, leaving Paul and Peach to their own devices.
Back inside, Mike encouraged me to play the piano a bit that first night, and offered up some feedback. Mike suggested I play some hymns, advice I have put to practice
Wednesday, October 28
Following the late night, I mostly rested.
That afternoon, Mike showed off his drone, a DJI Mavic Mini (Amazon.com), a bit, and I was quite impressed, especially given my personal experience with drones to date has been limited to the EMAX Tinyhawk (Amazon.com).
Mike spent some time going over music in preparation for Sunday, and I sat opposite him, pulling photos from my X100V (Adorama, Amazon.com), and pushing them to signal I’d arrived for anyone paying attention
We went to the drive-thru at In-N-Out, and wound up with someone else’s order, a fact uncovered only after we’d gotten back to Mike’s house. Whoops.
Inspired by the book, I began building out a playlist I’ll continue revisiting and modifying over time
Thursday, October 29
Mike drove the Lexus down to Nelson. I brought along both my Canon 5D Mark III and my X100V, but didn’t shoot anything with the latter.
We dusted off after about an hour and a half, and headed to (Old) Nelson’s Landing, where we walked down by the river. Upon coming to a resting point, Mike discovered he’d left his drone on the charger at home!
I took the wheel and drove us to Boulder City, and on to Hoover Dam. At the parking lot of the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, Mike heeded a sign stating no pets were allowed, and hung back with Peach. Paul, ever the VIP, and I headed onwards to see what we might see.
Afterwards, we drove across the dam, and briefly into Arizona, where we stopped to look back before returning to Las Vegas
We supped on bread and soup, downing it all with some wine from Pahrump
Friday, October 30
At 12:29AM I shared a story to my Instagram account indicating I’d forgotten to pack along a mini USB cable
We headed out in the Smart so Mike could cast his ballot. It was the final day of early voting, and the line was long, so I dipped into a couple nearby stores. Finding Mike still in line, I explored the area, and snagged some free provisions from a food truck just adjacent the line.
Stocked up, I drifted further in search of a smoker whilst snacking on some cheese-flavored puffed corn balls. I saw green banners exclaiming, “FREE,” in the parking lot across the street, so I wandered over to investigate.
At the corner, I observed the aftermath of an accident involving multiple vehicles. I spied a lady gazing over the scene nearby, a lit cigarette in hand. I offered her a dollar in exchange for a smoke, but she remained mute while a man nearby spoke French into his phone. I pressed onwards.
The banners were affixed to a food truck, and a handful of people were gathered around. I heeded the nearby sign and submitted an order for a burger, chips, and a drink using my phone. I gathered it was a sampling event for Incogmeato, a product I’d never tried, but was willing to check out for the price of free.
The manager came out of the truck and cautioned those assembled they’d exhausted their supply of patties, so I tempered my expectations accordingly, hoping at best to receive chips and a drink. As orders came up, I observed most folks tipped the man.
While waiting on my order, I continued snacking on my puffed corn balls. A lady sitting in the driver’s seat of a van parked nearby made eye contact with me, signaled she’d like me to throw some corn balls her way, and we engaged in a bit of catch.
At 12:48PM, Mike finished casting his ballot. I had him come meet me, and showed him the sign so that he might also grab a snack.
The manager delivered my order, and I slipped him a buck before returning to the shade beside my new friend’s van. I opened the box, and was delighted to find I’d lucked out and received a burger!
I asked van lady whether she’d put in an order, too. Soy came up. She seemed like a hippie sort, and the lettering on the side of her van indicated she cut hair for a living. She talked about her invisibility as a member of the service industry. She shared her geocaching app with me, and showed the caches she’d found along the Extraterrestrial Highway before checking our current location and discovering there was a cache nearby. Perhaps we could go investigate it together?
Mike scored quite a bit from the manager of the popup on account of standing up for him after some “customers” felt shafted when they didn’t receive a burger
That afternoon, Mike suggested we check out a nearby tea place. I spotted a motorcycle parked on the curb by the door that I guessed might be electric (it was)
Saturday, October 31
I put some of my home network skills to use and hardwired Mike’s home theater components to his LAN
We spent some time afterwards cleaning and oiling his handguns
That evening, we headed out in the Lexus. It was pretty busy along the strip – neat columns of police vehicles stood vigil outside some hotels
I shot a little video of the fountain at the Bellagio from afar
Fremont Street Experience looked especially busy
We saw the container park from afar, and circled back. We spotted Circa, which had just opened, and stopped in for a visit. We passed through Circa and wandered the Fremont Street Experience before returning to Mike’s home
Sunday, November 1
Mike went in early to go through the music with the singers, and came back to pick me up
We went to Faith Christian Fellowship (faithchristianhenderson.org) – it was my first time attending a church service in many years
That afternoon, I made a banana bread, but used four bananas instead of the usual three. Mike wisely suggested it could use some more time in the oven, reheating the affair, but I pulled it before it had gotten much more cooking time upon seeing the top beginning to turn.
Monday, November 2
We set out in the Lexus
I picked up the wheel after we made a stop just outside the entrance to Zion National Park
Mike was scheduled to work that evening and was in a bit of a hurry. The park was smaller than some I’ve been in, and we didn’t do any hiking, but it was worth the trip out of Las Vegas. Didn’t fly the drone any!
Back in St. George, UT, we met up with The Guru at Café Rio, a local chain. It was my first time seeing him since we were schoolmates at the International School of Beijing: his family had left Beijing for Azerbaijan, and were now living right up on the bluff overlooking the lot. The Guru offered to put me in touch with the friends he was riding with, but I didn’t take him up on it, even though I was curious about the unicycle. We learned about his work, and we talked about cacao beans a while.
The Guru wasn’t particularly impressed by solar – apparently some guy quoted thirty year breakeven, which made me curious to keep scratching, especially after reading recently about the problems in solar panel recycling
The Guru told me about SF Supermarket, mentioning his mother liked it over 99 Ranch.
I took us back to Las Vegas, and rested a bit upon our return.
By the time I woke up, Mike had already taken off for work. I drove the Smart to SF Supermarket, but found it closed for the night. Not too far off into the distance, the lights of the strip called to me, and I went in to the Aria. I signed up for an M-Life account, no free play awarded with signup. I quickly burned through the few dollars I’d brought with me on the slot machines, and poked around to see what I might find. As I weaved among the machines, I recalled how I had thought during my trip to San Diego that the thing most readily distinguishing me from a cleaner member of the homeless was the camera. One small win from a video poker machine with one hand’s credit remaining unplayed netted me a buck and change. Ultimately, I was able to uncover more than I’d originally walked in with, but not quite enough to buy a shot at the lowest-priced table games.
I walked over to the Park MGM after visiting briefly with Mike, and found it much less active than the Aria. Outside, I chatted with a group of black women visiting from Michigan to celebrate the elderly one’s birthday. I encouraged the one who had been hitting the slot machines to check out the table games, passing along the tip about craps. Recommended she check out the movie, 21, and the elderly one’s eyes lit up as she shared that she’d seen trailers.
I walked back to Aria, where I lost everything on slots and video poker, and called it a night.
Tuesday, November 3
That morning, I discovered there was an appropriate cable for offloading images from the 5D Mark III, and shared captures for the first time. I reflected a bit on what development, if any, I have experienced as a photographer after all these years of shooting. This marked my first time really taking it out, and I trusted the equipment, running and gunning without pausing to nitpick at settings between captures.
I walked with Paul over to Smith’s, bummed some smokes off the employees. One had a shirt reading, “I stand for the flag…” and was playing some interesting, unifying hip hop. A lady griped about the smell as she walked by, and I agreed empathically with her that smoking is a foul habit.
Mike gave me a call and picked me up.
I drove us in the Smart to Juan’s Flaming Fajitas. We sat outside on the patio, which turned out to be dog-friendly. Juan came by to say hi to Mike. I learned he was from Ade, OK. Mike shared how his cousin (?) of 80 years was a big fan. Mike commented I was a good tipper, and I empathized – we have to make up for the bad ones. Social contract, but that’s something I’ve written about previously.
We swung back by the house so I could grab recording equipment. Mike gave me a haircut at his shop
Unfortunately I neglected to charge the X100V battery, and I wasn’t paying very much attention to it (I had my glasses off), and it only managed to capture 22 minutes 6 seconds – I’m glad I had the foresight to set up my phone as a B cam. It would have been nice to have had the storage capacity to confidently capture the entire scene in 4K – definitely going to want the capacity to do that in the future now I have a good solution to the storage problem
I drank a good number of the Michelob Ultras from the garage fridge, decided to play back some YouTube videos after I tired of the election coverage. I was particularly impressed by Ethan Hawke’s TED talk. Other material had me reflecting on college years, reaffirmed some best practices I’d gleaned through the years, and wishing a bit how I might have been raised a little differently
I showed plenty of love to Peach and Paul both, and lay down to catch some shuteye ahead of my flight
Wednesday, November 4
I was awakened by the sound of an alarm blaring: Mike had slid an old phone beneath the door and set it to wake me at 6:10AM. Still groggy, I hopped out of bed, and gathered my belongings for the trip home.
Curbside at LAS, I gave Mike a hug, and he set off for his appointment. I milled around for a bit, waiting on a smoker. Shared a couple cigarettes with Robert, a New York native who’d moved to Las Vegas in 2015, and had spent the past year working out of Pueblo, CO, on all manner of interior finishing work for some new builds (work just kept on picking up – he told me after we reconnected on the escalator past the tram and walked towards our respective gates that he’d originally gone down with a basic set of tools and wound up acquiring more)
The woman on the far end of the conveyor belt at the TSA checkpoint pulled the water in my bag. dumped the sealed water I had and wouldn’t allow me to drink it unless I turned back from the checkpoint. She passed me along to a gentleman for escort. Fortunately, he spoke with his supervisor and allowed me to pass with what little water I had left in my bottle
At the gate, the gate agent informed me the overhead bins were nearly full, and provided me with a baggage tag in the event there was no longer any space for my suitcase. Paul and I boarded the aircraft after some hesitation, during which time it was clear I would need to leave my suitcase with the handler, and I was delighted to find we had three seats to ourselves
Paul looked out the window a bit on my encouragement, but otherwise lay down promptly in my lap
I shot a ~20 minute long sequence as we took off from LAS:
At first, I had intended to quit rolling as soon as we’d cleared the city, but I’m glad I didn’t. I kept my eyes on the display of my phone as its camera soaked up the beautiful, rugged country below. It was hard imagining returning to the flat, concrete jungle of Houston, but I’m grateful I had the opportunity to visit the desert. I look forward to returning someday with better capture equipment
I spent the flight reviewing my captures and drafting this post, gazing out the window at times. From my seat, I saw frozen bodies of water, marks of modern civilization looking like printed circuit boards. We’ve imposed all these rigid shapes; perfect circles, rows of windmills, where nature has a design language all its own; fluid, flowing lines, shaped by currents past and present.
Paul, meanwhile, curled up and napped on a seat all his own.
To provide some visual contrast, I captured landing at IAH:
Upon touchdown, I called mz mischievous. She was at work. Next, I called Kussah, who was available to pick me up.
I stopped at Landry’s to have a drink while I waited. I ordered a shrimp cocktail, which turned out to be a mistake. Imagine how I felt to discover $15 BTAX only bought me six shrimp! Fortunately, Karbach’s Hopadillo remained as good as ever.
I retrieved my suitcase from the baggage claim office, and headed outside, where I waited around, keeping an eye out for Kussah. Eventually a man wearing a black cowboy hat emerged from the baggage claim and lit up a cigarette. I approached him, apologizing that I didn’t have my customary buck to offer. A 37-year old Austinite, he was off to Florida to see Jackie (not the working type) for her birthday. His grandmother had just passed a couple days ago after grappling with Alzheimer’s for years. In the end, she couldn’t swallow. We wished each other all the best as Kussah came around to whisk me home.
